Azeitonas e Bondade (Olives and Kindness)

A senhora dizia: "Deus quis assim".

The six months in Lisbon are done. I see a lot of people, empty people walking too distracted trying to earn money by impressing somehow. People who try to follow suffocatingly a fierce and heartless train. Untouchable people. I've seen enough.
Being my return to the beautiful village of Banguad still too radical, I got an intermediate solution. Live in, and from a more rural place in Portugal . The return to agriculture is supported, and the untreated plots are a reality that avoids an investment in land acquisition. My struggle is, of a sustainable way, move from the office to the plowing keeping an playful and financial future attractive. And at the same time, why not to give an answer to the many souls I see sharing the same suffering without, apparently, having a solution in sight. Here comes my romantic idea of community, to respond to the problems of the country, the comfort of the nature, life quality and happiness, just by changing the mentality, through an idea and how to get the means to carry it on . Hence the idea of working such land, to produce something valuable ( today, what nature offers us without being changed to keep up with the heartless train, is extremely valuable ) and to make it financially sustainable .
An olive grove came up about an hour and a half of my usual stops. Being the olive oil production an old wish of mine, that doesn't require many demands, it excited me. And consequently, the landowner, emigrant that sadly sees the olive trees that their ancestors took care, abandonment, too. I lack the knowledge, but the will is everything and the extraction of knowledge from this genuine people who learned from the wind, from the jagged leaves, is a pleasure. And their will to teach, mutual. As Maria would say, "the hunger gathers with the will to eat."
In the last days of my grandmother, I felt that with her, it would die a lot of knowledge from the land that I couldn't extract, and that the people no longer appreciate. Moreover, the lack of consideration for the elderly scares me. ( The self-destruction (un)conscious as we do with the planet. We ignor what we will be.) For me, knowledge is time, whatever time is spent. Even a drunk knows a lot of his science .

I'm on a train, one of the best places to write, and I appreciate the beauty of this country that deserves better. I come from a weekend spent at a coworker's place whose family also produces olive oil. I tried to learn as much as I could. The father holds a position in a municipalized service, is able to build a quality house, land worker and proud of his trees. Keeps the eyes shinning of a young man. It reminded me of the handymans of Almviks. The lady, an old fashion cooking woman who keeps the house, the garden and the vegetable garden perfect. She never got tired of giving me. I could only defend myself of their infinite offerings justifying with my belly (which is growing). A simple couple, humble workers who weren't lucky with the health of their children. The daughter in a wheelchair and with a certain nervous limitation and their son holding a deficiency in the legs that doesn't allow him to walk balanced. The lady said "God wanted it that way ." But with the land's help and humbleness towards nature, they walk with no financial problems.
I felt as loved again as I did in Thailand, but with no children this time. Instead of rice fields, hills covered with yellow gorse, but the same simplicity. A generosity of which I couldn't answer. These people from the country side, reached my heart and I leave them with the feeling that I have learned much more than olive growing.

Tudo é possível (Everything is possible)

Aconteceu e marcou-me.

Ervilhas da horta urbana / Peas from the urban garden

The things become clear. The stress, the anxiety, the problems ... Of course that the birth rate gets lower on the most developed countries. There's less love.
I have noticed that I am not alone. People want me to be successful with an alternative close to nature, tranquility and away from this unbridled and blind ambition to win in a system that was beaten a long time ago. There is fear. Of course there is fear, of the difficulties, of the lack of financial freedom. But the signs are too obvious. I can do it. I had the privilege of knowing very different realities, answers to feelings I didn't understand. To travel is this, is to know new ways of seeing things, open the mind, put the pieces together, so that all starts to make sense. My trip wasn't a dream. It happened and marked me. It's normal that I can not proceed in the same way. I know more now, and not less as some people here try to make me believe in. And on this, my cousin Ricardo is right. Even to him, I can show that it is possible... or with him...

Seis meses passaram (Six months have passed)

Portugal, normalmente tira-me confiança. Mas preencheria-me tal?

 Link from work to...

Two days have passed after the six months I lived in Portugal since I returned. For a long time that I had turned my back to the paper and to myself. I've been a month and a half working in an environment that far from being perfect, kept me challenged and without much time to think. At the earlier period and at the current everything was uncertain and moribund. My mind wanders back into dreams about nature, how to subsist on agriculture, with the warmth's peace, the joy of simple people, with enough time to breathe. The melancholic bands are comforting me again, which is not a good sign. The coach project it's not bad at all but I realize that to work I have to be more unlikable than what I would wish. I don't even have time to express myself artistically or sportively. And what to do now? The only thing I like of being eight hours in an office is the financial reward, and in Portugal, it's not being so rewarding anymore. I really like my family but they are also so far from my ambitions. Maybe they could help me taking care of a rural space. I lack some confidence in myself to be able to take these projects forward. Portugal usually takes that confidence away from me. Going abroad, the opposite. Thailand has got an open door for me, always. An easy place, where people are waiting for me and I could satisfy the desire to spend a year helping children and adults in that village. But would that fulfill me? Maybe there's only one way to know.

Pensamentos soltos ( Loose thoughts )

<<>>

Life tells us that there is a way for all of us. The signs are interpreted by senses. And who doesn't have the courage to follow this path, will find misfortune.

<>

Wandering in Lisbon, the little beauty I find on faces, is on the youngest. Life will always wear us out, but it's not supposed to do it internally so soon.

<>

Anna, with her extreme sensitivity, makes me forget I'm alone. But this body is still terrified of illusions.

O inadaptado (The misfit)

In this society we work...
It's a prison, the price to pay for things you want in a lifestyle of this kind: things... the best home possible, the best car possible, the best possible mate and corresponding family, dinners, vacations, gadgets, etc...
And if we are not interested in any of this? We sacrifice our freedom for what? I want music, sun, friends, smiles and ride a lot on a bike through valleys, mountains, woods...
Here, I just feel like a freak, a misfit ... knowing that I can share so much happiness, in the right environment.

Rindo e dançando sobre a merda (Laughing and dancing over the shit)

Tenho dito muitas vezes ultimamente: Tá tudo maluco! E nada me aparece para contrariar tal contestação.

I'm hungry, I'm cold and I have no desire to stick myself on the subway. I've said many times lately: It's all crazy! And nothing happens to show me that I'm wrong.
Yesterday morning, on my way to work, I heard a man shouting on the phone, fumbling with the umbrella and saying: You can go to the grave with the money! The hatred expressed tore my heart like a knife.
Right now, I hear a warning message at the Marquês de Pombal metro station that repeated until exhaustion. Do they want us to go mad? I ain't hear nobody happy with their life, and on one way or another, the jobs are far for fulfilling the people.
I just got out of a training, where the trainer not secured about the subject, could not help himself escape that the technology could be a big headache and that our training process/inclusion in a new project was being very poorly managed. It is something that usually happens, but to be reported by an employee of our company that shows to fly the company's flag is very bad.
I just want to walk, wandering aimlessly.
A man walks by me walking a dog. He's cursing, supposedly at the dog: Someday you'll get a shot you'll be sleeping right there. (!)
A poster advertising a play with the title "There are many reasons for a person to want to be beautiful" makes me curious. I think that are a lot of people who need to know what those reasons are. By the way, I see many pretty girls in Lisbon, but almost all of them walk with a haunting discomfort. They are afraid even to look.

Como te sentes? (How do you feel?)

Como te sentes? Nem mal, nem bem. Tou tranquilo.

How do you feel? Not bad, not good. I'm chilled. My mind use to be set on Cacém football team. The problems among the kids, the training sessions, what to do to win.
What is bad for you? Stress, too much worries, lack of rest, especially of the head.
And what is good for you? To dream, experience something intensely, the contact with friends...

I am a being full of love but also proud. When no one around me, I get sad. But when among others, the opportunity to share it arises, and seeing its effect on others, I get filled with happiness. :)

Porquê? (Why?)

Como é que eu hei de começar? Não me sinto nada feliz. Sinto-me seco, cansado e sozinho. Os The Shins aquecem-me um pouco trazendo boas recordações.
As conversas parecem-me vagas, repetitivas e inúteis.

How should I start? I'm not feeling happy at all. Yesterday, after a training session, that seemed like a nightmare, everything collapsed. The team victories and "the dream" have been my only source of happiness. I feel dry, tired and alone. The Shins warm me a bit bringing good memories. Why is it so hard to be happy here?
The conversations sound vague, repetitive and useless. I see well-dressed people on the outside but naked inside. It's all so gray and my hope fades away. I don't have the confident walk anymore and the work seems just to fill my head and put me away from the world. I don't even have time to buy healthy fruits or  healthy vegetables. Oh.. La Boriette green beans...
I try to help those who don't want to be helped, and I find myself completely frustrated and aside. I drink coffee and smoke cigarettes to keep going and I don't have time to stop. I'm ashamed of not being writing positive things.
A few months ago I felt able to do everything and now I can barely smile. Why?

Ousar (To dare)

I'm on a train. The outside lights make the windows look like flashing televisions. I'm exhausted, my face expression is dead but I can't stop. My brain doesn't rest. I try to imagine a tasty meal but what will it be?
After one more run to catch a bus, I start thinking of how I'm not using the chance of living in Lisbon, of depriving myself of smoking and ... at a bus stop, I look at a bar that grabs my attention. And has toasted sandwiches. I, suddenly, get off the bus. When arriving, I buy a pack of cigarettes and I notice that the national team is playing. Here we go. It could be a sign. Or a reward for daring to leave the rails.

No circuito ( On the circuit )

Estou cansado.
Pensei: Isto afinal funciona! :)
Estou a chegar à estação final: Alcântara. Aí vou eu voltar ao circuito.

I'm tired. The team busies my mind most of the dead times, and at work, I also have been focused on the screen. It's not that I'm not liking (the time has passed quickly - must be a good sign) but at the end of the day, I feel that I took my head out of a hole. I come out to the street half dazed.
Among my colleagues, the feeling isn't that different and in some cases, the stress levels are notorious. The urban landscape doesn't help either: flashing lights, roaring machines, buzzing cables.. is an aggressive environment and far from the nature harmony. Why all this?
I feel my expressions more taciturn. The laughs are not so easy (yet, thanks Roda - a colleague of mine who is by far the most nonconformist and cheerful).
Today my company asked me if I was available to go to Belgium. Why not? What I want is to go out, see and know. The only thing that I automatically didn't want to leave was my season at Cacém. Just yesterday, I was proud to see the team training well and in good spirits after a lecture I gave. I thought: This works after all! :)
I am arriving to the final station: Alcântara. Here I go,enter on the circuit again.

Perdi? (Did I lost?)

Alfama
No meio de tanta correria e stress, começo a esquecer-me e a perder coisas.
Sempre a apoiar a boa disposição.

Communication at home

In such rush and stress, I start to forget and lose things. Last time, something very important. My second notebook of the journey where I had three or four recent texts for publish on this blog, other thoughts, memories of the journey, etc...
There is an interesting feeling in losing something important. It's like starting over again, from blank pages (literally) with all the possibilities open.
The final text, written two weeks ago, was about all my new adventure as a football coach of a team of fourteen years old kids. Kids quite different from the Thai ones. And how makes me think a lot about football. What a sacrifice ehehehe.
The earlier one was about how the routine was bothering me already, another one, an aftermath to Christmas spent among family and that I felt, somehow, special for some irreverence and informality. Always supporting the pleasant moments. And another one, to the year's eve, that however much I tried to avoid, I stupidly drank too much.

Deslumbres ( Amazments )

Trânsito do demóin / Traffic hell
Bom dia! O ritmo aqui é outro. O tempo para mim e para a minha organização, é escasso. As coisas sucedem-se. Tudo aquilo me tocou muito.

João e o nosso lar / João and our place
Good morning! The pace here is different. The time for me and for my organization, is scarce. Things happen. Events, meetings and experiences. While traveling, I often had moments of amazement that filled me up. Recently, I had two of these moments, here in Lisbon. The first, during an interview in an association that supports people with debt problems. The shine of a person who's happy with what is doing. Feeling that can really help. And who saw on my situation her past one. It could have been a movie. I was quite moved by all that.
The second, a showcase of documentaries made by students of a Swiss school which the topic was the current financial crisis having Lisbon as the scenario. A friend of João, Julia, also attended and she was, proudly, the director of the one I liked more. Our sadness seen by outside artists. Much "French cinema" that I am fan of. Watchful, concerned and always artistic eyes, working on matters we refuse to look at, like the "slavery" in which we live, the forgetfulness of the elderly, the abandonment of Lisbon, the Intendente... It was with some sadness that I saw the discomfort, disinterest of whom was with me watching the films. Too critical minds... Lack of openness? Too much demanding? I'm glad I liked it.

Estou à procura (I'm looking for)

Estou à procura de sítios onde sair à noite. Socializar.

I'm looking for places to go out at night. Socialize. Not of places that the only things to do are drinking and saying nonsense. I'm looking for places where ideas roam,  projects are attempted, inspirations are shared. And why not with a drink? I'm looking for a place where people want to do things. Innovative, generous, social. People who think of solutions, that change the world. I want to participate in a constructive socialization and not a frivolous pleasure one.

Do que precisas? (What do you need?)

The crime (with my flatmate)

The Fall in my hometown (with Rui and Sasha)

My day to day has began. It's cold as hell, but it's good to be sharing a house with someone, seeing different people on the streets and, finally, programming, the area to which I long wanted to return. The time is not much and I still have friends to see after the six months. My habits are not yet in a routine (which is good) and Lisbon is still an immensity to be discovered.
Today, at the mirror, I had to say to myself: You're not ugly, but you don't need to be so tidy (Vodafone influences).
On the street, people look to each other in a quite different way from how they look in Thailand. There are those who look to the floor, without even daring to look ahead, those who're hoping for a look back, those who look for the simple pleasure of seeing and nothing more than that, but not anymore the look with a smile with a willingness to communicate. Still, it has pleased me the frequent moments of sympathy randomly found. Despite the many flaws that people have, we continue to be a warm people.
A question has coming to my mind: What do you need? I found in the Thai people, a huge happiness and they don't even have the word need. For me, now, it's quite obvious that less the need, the happier you become. My mother is a strange case. I won't put her happiness here in question, but her desire to have things and the suffering that she feels when losing a trifle, is atrocious. One more reason to believe that travelers are the best people in the world. They have little and with the little they find, they make a party.
Personally, and not thinking about physiological needs, I need to feel useful, connected to the world, laugh, share what I am...

Tenho força (I have strength)

Samouco
Perto da oficina do meu pai / Next to my father's garage
É a minha luta. É o momento.

"I'm only happy by laziness"
Felicidade é simplicidade / Happiness is simplicity

The days pass. On some, some things happen, on others, not really. There isn't, definitely, nothing comparable to share. Now, the idea has reversed. It's no longer about putting my countrymen up to date, but the friends I left around the world or those who also left Portugal and haven't returned yet.
The moments of solitude (moments of inspiration), also haven't been many.
I found the country more sunk in a financial crisis, than when I left. It's a reason of lamentations and conversations everywhere. I remember the communities through which I passed. The self-sufficient ones, the lives with little and smiles, the humility. I have strength.
I'm going to live in Lisbon. I'll share a small apartment with my friend João. Even the internet, seems that will be shared by neighbors. Living with little, in community, helping each other, sharing knowledge, love. This is the answer I have for this gray country, forgotten by the Atlantic, where loneliness and the financial schemes are seen everywhere. There are people with so much value... they don't deserve to be constrained by the current conditions. The country, the society, need something. It's my fight. It's the time.

Voltar a descobrir (Discovering again)

Sorri / Smile
Nas traseiras, uma horta considerável chamou-me a atenção, e dadas as áreas, a luz e as vistas, sentia-me satisfeito.
Lisboa.

It was day to go to Lisbon and visit the first houses. When waiting to take the bus in Montijo, near the neighborhood where I grew up, where my parents have their house and I, mine, it was good to exchange a few gestures of courtesy with a friendly and expansive mister that I usually see around that place.
In Lisbon, with a help of a map, I searched the first house that was scheduled to eleven a.m. (I forgot that João would be busy in the morning). Getting up there was tiring, but there, close to the building, I was rewarded with a beautiful view of Lisbon. I entered, and the portress, one of those ladies who can't stop talking, showed me the place and put me up to everything.
In the back, a beautiful garden caught my attention, and given the areas, the light and views, I felt satisfied. I saw myself living there and the conversation with the man who takes care of the garden, which also traveled a lot when he was younger, helped me to feel the parochial spirit, which I also found be possible, there.
I drank a coffee in the nearest place and investigated the surroundings where I found grocers, butchers, spectacular views of the Castle and the Tagus, a supermarket and a swimming pool. I felt discovering again, enthusiastic about this new adventure that I set. Lisbon.

Civilização? (Civilization?)

O bairro / The neighborhood
As conversas extensas e embrulhadas, as intransigências.

Sentado no passeio / Sitting on the sidewalk

Writing, for me, always had a therapeutic effect, in fact, like any other art. Even in Thailand, where I felt very happy, I had moments where the writing helped to unblock myself, to put my head on the right place and to proceed, lighter. It also lessens the feeling of loneliness because we address ourselves to someone.
On Saturday night, I had dinner with some close guys, and there are things that don't change. The drinking isn't surprising, but the way they get lit, it's something I was no longer used to. The extensive and confusing conversation, the intransigence. I managed, after a big struggle, not to go to Timília das Meias, place with such bad memories.
On one day of this week, I was waiting for my brother, sitting on the sidewalk and accompanied by Maggie. I was noticing that not even a little piece of ground had been left to the art of nature. Tar, pavement, grass. All designed, nothing left to chance.
A stout lady was slowly passing by, leaning on two crutches. She was talking or swearing alone. Why? What kind of life have you had? What happened to you to get to this?
My brother came and took us to for a coffee.

Primeiros sinais de depressão (First signs of depression)

After three days being in Portugal, I start to feel the first signs of depression.
I only saw a few friends, some with more excitement than others. So far, Hermano was the one who more juice took out of me, it was great to know that João is willing to live with me in Lisbon, but a lot of shit is still here. It's cold as hell, conversations that I didn't miss, continue to roam and dirty habits mix with gray environments. There are no longer smiles and the cashier of Lidl seemed a machine attending me. I felt like a part on an assembly line.
When ordering a coffee, a child attends me and I feel a glow from an interaction again. This is the way. This is the way I should go.
